Tunas and tuna-like species, such as swordfish, marlins, mackerels and billfishes, are highly migratory fish species. They may be found in the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian Oceans and their respective adjacent seas. Fish are not bound to country borders. Many fish ‘straddle’ the exclusive economic zone of one or more countries, and a specific part of the high seas. Other fish ‘migrate’ through the EEZs of many different countries, and vast areas of the high seas. Still other fish are found only on the high seas at a particular location and/or specific depths.

The health and sustainability of these fish stocks depend not only on how countries regulate fishing within their own territorial waters, but also on activities outside their borders. Efforts to conserve or protect a fish stock or an ocean ecosystem made by one jurisdiction may be fruitless unless they are met with co-operative actions at the regional and global level. Regional fisheries management organizations (RFMOs) are the legal entities which bring fishing nations and entities together to accomplish conservation and sustainable management of straddling, highly migratory and high seas discrete stocks.

There are five RFMOs that have responsibility for the management of tunas:

* Commission for the Conservation of Southern Bluefin Tuna (CCSBT)
* Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC)
* Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC)
* International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT)
* Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC)

The meeting holds from June 29 until July 3 2009 and there is foreseen the participation of approximately 450 people who were spending an average of three nights in San Sebastian. The meeting is open to participation by any of the following that have official Observer Status or Cooperating non-Member Status in any of the five RFMOs (CCSBT, IATTC, ICCAT, IOTC or WCPFC).

The challenges commonly faced by those RFMOs include establishment of effective and comprehensive stock rebuilding programs, collection of reliable data for stock assessment, restriction of fishing capacity/fishing effort, implementation of effective MCS (monitoring, control and surveillance) measures, striking a balance between the needs of developed and developing states, and effective cooperation among the tuna RFMOs.

The assembled members and cooperating non members of the five tuna RFMOs present at the Joint Meeting of Tuna RFMOs, recognizing the critical need to arrest further stock decline in the case of depleted stocks, maintain and rebuild tuna stocks to sustainable levels and deal effectively with overfishing, overcapacity and IUU fishing activities, jointly commit to take urgent actions to cooperate through tuna RFMOs in accordance with their obligations under international law. While noting that tuna RFMOs have different characteristics, pressures on their individual stocks, and management arrangements, it was agreed that enhanced cooperation among tuna RFMOs on a broad range of issues can increase their effectiveness and efficiency and provide improved management of all tuna stocks.

This event is designed to focus the attention of all the agents involved in developing renewable energy sources in Europe. With 150 interactive talks in round-table format and workshops with experts, it will be an opportunity to create and reinforce the European knowledge networks that will contribute to consolidating renewable energy markets. The aim of the event is to exchange information and knowledge on the various problems, needs, demands and solutions of the different agents involved, by presenting and examining real case studies.

The European Future Energy Forum promises to follow in the footsteps of its parent World Future Energy Summit in bringing togeter experts and business leaders to join the debate and find solutions in an industry where investment is still cast despite the current economic climate.  This will be Europe’s largest ever exchange of knowledge on future energy solutions.

On that occasion, the Kursaal Congress Centre in Guipuzcoa’s provincial capital will be the venue for a reference forum where international experts from various companies including Toshiba, Carl Zeiss or FEI will present the major recent developments in the ultraprecision and microtechnology spheres of activity.

The Eibar-based technology centre TEKNIKER-IK4 is responsible for coordinating this year’s edition of the International Conference that purports to be a showcase for the most significant global advances in such areas as precision manufacturing processes, measuring systems, instruments and techniques, or the design of last-generation materials for precision, micro and nano engineering. All of these technologies are essential to developing new products and processes in key sectors of high added value like the automotive, aeronautic, biomedical, electronic and renewable energy industries.
At this 9th edition of the International Conference of EUSPEN, commercial sessions will alternate with more specifically technical lectures. These will include papers delivered by Dr. K. Tanaka, Technical Adviser and former General Manager of the electronics company Toshiba’s High Precision Machine Division, by Dr. W. Nahm, Advanced Development Manager of optical service company Carl Zeiss, and by Dr. A. Frank de Jong, Research & Technology Manager of specialist nanotechnology company FEI.

The presidency of EUSPEN has chosen to hold this Conference in Euskadi because it is “internationally recognised” as “the centre of the Spanish machine-tool industry”. As they claim, this industry has landed the Basque Country €1,050 million in 2007 and has grown by 7.3%. In their opinion, it is essential for applications in such sectors as the automotive and aerospace industries. EUSPEN further points out that on those grounds they decided to entrust “the Spanish leading centre in mechatronics, manufacturing technologies and micro and nanotechnologies” - alluding to Tekniker-IK4 - with the organization of the event.

For that very reason, the event organisers have planned guided visits during the conference-opening day, giving the participants the chance to choose from three representative leaders of the nanotechnology and precision engineering industry in Gipuzkoa. These are TEKNIKER-IK4 Technology Centre in Eibar; the Nanoscience Cooperative Research Centre CIC nanoGUNE sited in Miramont Technology Park, San Sebastian; and the specialist machine-tool manufacturer Danobat having its principal place of business in Elgoibar.

The European Society for Precision Engineering and Nanotechnology (EUSPEN) is an influential organization that gathers businesses, researchers and other bodies from 30 countries worldwide and helps them to make contact. Set up in the United Kingdom in 1999, EUSPEN is an international platform that aims to foment collaboration between companies and research centres with a view to promoting technological developments.
On the other hand, with over 25 years of experience doing research in applied technology and transferring the same to the industry, TEKNIKER-IK4 has reached a high level of specialization in four major areas: Precision Engineering and Mechatronics, Surface Engineering, Production Engineering, and Manufacturing Automation and Technologies. TEKNIKER-IK4 is thus able to make its leading-edge technology available to all sorts of tasks. In 2008, developments by the Eibar-based technology centre were worth about 19 million euro.

During the last ten years there has been achieved that San Sebastian turns for a few days into the epicentre of the national and European Gastronomy, organizing one of the most prestigious events of the sector.

The carpet of the Kursaal has been welcomed the best coks of the Gastronomyc world. And it is going to continue doing it.

After this full time of successes it is the moment to evolve and explore new tracks.

At the same time San Sebastian Gastronomika will offer a congress of Hotel industry, conference halls, restaurants, pintxos, wines, infantile nourishment and, as innovative format, there have been created exclusive lessons, extraordinary gatherings and classrooms ” close up ” for limited groups.

The congress San Sebastian Gastronomika is going to have two fundamental cores: ” The trajectory- the Memory of the Future -”, where, in duet format, big national and international cooks will make clear the way crossed by their cuisine up to coming to their last elaborations; and for the first time in San Sebastian, ” The infinite cuisines of Japan “, where we will be able to discover in Spanish sole right from the most advanced Japanese chefs - among them, the phenomenon Narisawa or the myth Hattori - to the big masters of the sushi, the entrails, the fritters and the mythical Kaiseki.

Off Gastronomika wants to advance, for its part, in the worlds of the Hotel industry, the conference halls, the infantile nourishment, the spits, the wine or the pintxos across thematic accounts and sensory classrooms of interactive intention.

Every year, at the end of May, San Sebastian is the scene chosen by the Spanish and Latin-American creativity to expose the best of this sector.

In the year 1986 the first edition of the festival took place in the city of Marbella, moving the celebration on the year following to the city of San Sebastian, which since then has turned in the official venue of the festival.El Sol is a festival of international scope; until the year 2002 the festival was named ” Advertising Festival of San Sebastian “, was limiting its participation to companies located in Spain. From the year 2003, the festival opens its doors to all the Spanish-speaking countries and Portuguese changing its denomination into The Sun  The Latin-American Festival of the Advertising Communication.

And all this with a great aim, which is not other one that positioning the festival as the benchmark of the Latin advertising.

It is a multimedia Festival, El Sol started its operations being a festival advertising that only was sheltering the section of television. Now following the fast evolution of the market different sections have been joining with the time to contest, giving content to all the expressions of the commercial communication and the advertising in all the areas.

In the last edition that took place last 29th, May 30 and 31, 2008, El Sol  relied on a participation closely of 3800 inscribed pieces proceeding from 18 countries and an assistance of 2400 persons. Undoubtedly San Sebastian during the days of celebration of the festival turns into an annual meeting of all the professionals of the communication.

In the current edition that will begin next May 28 will rely on debates, projections, conferences, the awards ceremony on Saturday the 30th and edition will be closed with the projection of the 24th edition winners.

EPOMM, the European Platform On Mobility Management, is a network of seven EU’s member states and is supported by the European Commission. The conference featuring more than 60 speakers from all over Europe, divided into parrallel meetings and interactive workshops, will raise diverse questions of great impact on urban mobility as the evaluation and costs-benefits analysis, urban planning, recovery of public spaces, local acces, reawakening of the bicycle as a mean of transport, health/obesity, leisure turism…
